Boosting the Achievement of Students in Poverty

Better Outcomes Research has been conducting a study to identify strategies used by New York State public schools whose Economically Disadvantaged students are doing well, in the yellow shading, above.

Using publicly-available data, we identified schools that have

  • 40% or more poverty;
  • 25% or more ED students scoring 3 or 4 on NY  ELA;
  • 65% or more ED students scoring 2, 3, or 4 on NY ELA;
  • 30 or more ED test-takers;

and have

  • no admissions criteria other than  residency; and
  • no in-district school choice.

The Annual “Beating the Odds” Conference began in 2017 to share the results of our study, and for education leaders to share best practices and learn from one another.

At our conferences, schools who were identified in the study as successful in the achievement of their students in poverty present their methods and strategies.
